SWIERENGA, JACOB: Peacefully, with family at his side at his home in Caistor Centre on Thursday, April 7, 2005, Jacob Swierenga in his 89th year. Beloved husband of Grietje Akke Swierenga (nee Piso), his wife of 63 years. Loving father of Wilfred (Nancy) of Darien, Wisconsin; Harold (Sabine) of SaltSpring Island, British Columbia; Henry (Twyla) of Smithville, Hilda Wiley (George) of St. Catharines and daughter-in-law Lynne Swierenga. He will also be missed by his 10 cherished grandchildren: Stephan, Heidi, Leath, Sheena and Kaylee Swierenga; Debbie Sawtelle; Curtis, Timothy, Karen and Benjamin Wiley; five great grandchildren, and one brother in The Netherlands. Predeceased by his infant son Johan in 1946, son Edward in 2003, and by several brothers and sisters. Jake was a veteran of World War II in the army of The Netherlands, and was named a Righteous Gentile by the Jewish National Fund. He, Grietje and their two oldest sons emigrated to Canada in 1947 on the first post-war immigrant ship from The Netherlands, and farmed in Caistor Township since 1951. Friends called at the Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service was held at the Smithville Presbyterian Church, 143 St. Catharines Street (Regional Road 20), on Monday, April 11, 2005 at 11 am. Interment Bethel Cemetery, Winslow. Memorial contributions to Smithville Presbyterian Church Heritage Fund or The Red Cross would be appreciated by the family.
